Withnell Sensors accredited laboratory

Withnell Sensors are a UKAS ISO17025 Accredited Laboratory, specialising in temperature and humidity calibration, we also supply temperature monitoring and storage equipment for laboratory automation. In this blog we will talk more about the benefits of laboratory automation as well as some of our very own solutions.

So, what is laboratory automation?

Laboratory automation is the utilisation of technology to automate and simplify laboratory processes and procedures, removing elements of manual and human intervention. Automation in the laboratory is becoming increasingly popular as it offers many benefits over traditional manual methods.

What are the benefits of laboratory automation?

One key benefit of automation in the laboratory is increased efficiency. Automated processes can substantially reduce the time it takes to complete a task and can also reduce the number of errors that occur due to the higher reliability of technology. In large-scale laboratory operations this becomes even more important, due to the fact large numbers of samples need to be analysed quickly and precisely.

Automation also leads to improved reproducibility of results. Automated processes are less prone to variations in technique and are more consistent than manual methods. This is especially important in research and development, where reproducibility is crucial for the validation of results.

Another benefit of automation is increased throughput. Automated processes can handle large numbers of samples in a short period of time, which is essential for high-throughput applications such as drug discovery and genetic research. This can significantly increase the productivity of a laboratory and help to meet tight deadlines.

In addition, automation can improve safety in the laboratory. Automated processes can reduce the need for human intervention in procedures that can cause them or someone else harm, such as handling hazardous chemicals or allocating the correct blood type to a patient. This can greatly reduce the risk of accidents and injuries. The use of automated systems also ‘frees up’ staff member time allowing them to focus on other tasks, increasing productivity. With automation, laboratories can improve the quality of their research while also reducing costs and increasing efficiency.

Our laboratory automation solutions

We provide a number of solutions for laboratory automation. One of those products is the Smartfreezer from Angelantoni Life Science.

Smart freezer

The Smartfreezer is a unique, fully automated, ultra-low temperature cryogenic freezer for the individual storage and retrieval of vials at -180°C in liquid nitrogen (vapor phase). This allows users to select the desired sample from the touch screen interface and the system does the rest- essentially it is a vending machine for biological samples, providing highly accurate and secure storage at ultra-low temperatures. This automation also protects the integrity of your stored samples as the Smartfreezer will select only the vial that you need. All other vials remains stored cryogenically and not exposed to short, sharp ambient ‘blasts’ that can degrade the sample over time.

Hemosafe

The Hemosafe ® is another automated product from Angelantoni Life Science, that can be used in healthcare and laboratories. It is a computerised and automated blood bank refrigerator that allows you to allocate and pick the right bag for the right patient at the point of care and at the time of actual need. The Hemosafe can improve patient safety by preventing the unintended mix up of blood bags and reduce potential product wastage.

SenseAnywhere

Finally, we offer the SenseAnywhere AiroSensor, a cloud based, automated & wireless temperature monitoring system. The Airosensor leads a new generation of ultra-low power, wireless temperature data loggers. Providing accurate temperature and humidity monitoring information and offering automatic, wireless transfer to the cloud. The system is intuitive and can be installed on a ‘fit and forget’ basis. Used by laboratories to monitor the ambient and storage areas such as fridges and freezers, alarms can be set to automatically notify the laboratory of any excursions and data is automatically sent to the cloud portal. This system massively increases productivity by removing the need for manual measurements. It also provides increased safety as precious samples can be monitored and protected 24/7 with alerts giving users time to intervene should an excursion occur.
