What is calibration?
Calibration is the testing of equipment (unit under test) by comparison of its measurements with a standard of known accuracy (reference standard). Our reference standard would ideally be more accurate than the unit under test and have its own calibration certificate which can be traced back through an unbroken chain of calibrated standards to an appropriate standard held by a National Laboratory. In the UK, this is the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).
Why calibrate?
Calibration delivers confidence in the accuracy of your measurement equipment. Ensuring the accuracy of a process that utilises your test equipment can be critical. Even slight variances in some measurements can have significant impacts on the quality or safety of an output.
How often should my equipment be calibrated?
Calibration intervals for your test equipment will be dependent on your quality system requirements and any specifications or standards applicable to your process, in some industries a calibration interval is recommended by the manufacturer, the most common frequency of calibration is annually.
