Vaccine Temperature Monitoring for Safety, Integrity and Efficacy

Continuous Vaccine Monitoring Systems

Vaccine temperature monitoring is an essential process required to ensure safety and efficacy. Achieved by placing data loggers in your fridges and storage areas, vaccine temperature monitoring will not only protect therapeutic power but also mitigate microbial contamination.

Withnell Sensors offer various data loggers which are ideal for vaccine temperature monitoring. In particular, data loggers with extended PRTs make the most suitable solution for vaccines due to their expansive temperature range capabilities. This often varies from -200 to +200°C.

Maintaining proper temperature control with the storage or transportation of vaccines is crucial, particularly due to the sensitivity of the biological components of the vaccine. If temperature deviates outside of the proper specified ranges (as declared by pharmaceutical regulatory affairs and bodies) then the vaccine can become ineffective and lose its efficacy.

In order to uphold regulatory standards, set out by organisations such as WHO/FDA/MHRA and others, vaccine temperature monitoring is a necessity. Proper monitoring ensures compliance with these global standards and the upkeep of public health standards.

Vaccine Monitoring & Waste Mitigation

A common challenge faced by the healthcare and medical sector is waste. Fridge failures, short shelf lives and improper storage can all add to the vaccine waste problem, vaccine temperature monitoring is a specific area where we can work to mitigate waste.

In some cases, vaccine waste cannot be helped. For example, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in over 7 million vaccine doses wasted and although the majority of these were due to the sensitivity and short shelf life of the Pfizer vaccine, there are also other factors which we can manage in a bid to help reduce any additional waste.

In many cases, vaccines can be a limited resource, and improper vaccine temperature monitoring, can lead to unnecessary waste of valuable product.

Vaccine Cold Chain Management

Vaccine Monitoring at Every Stage

There are three core aspects of vaccine temperature monitoring, storage, transport and clinics. The distribution of vaccines across this chain is vital for public health, however, their temperature, humidity and other crucial parameters must be monitored closely to ensure the safety of administration. Depending on your stage of vaccine temperature monitoring, these features are often paramount:

Storage facilities - automated logging with a remote monitoring system that allows for real-time and instantaneous alerts.

Transportation - consistent and accurate monitoring regardless of signals and GPS location, to ensure a constant traceable log of transit data

Clinic - historical log of data records to ensure that audits can be conducted with ease and temperature is read prior to administration
