What are laminar flow hoods?

Withnell Sensors are elated to partner Angelantoni Life Science (ALS) to provide a wide range of laminar flow hoods/ laminar flow cabinets. The cabinets provide an aseptic work area whilst containing infectious splashes or aerosols produced by microbiological procedures. Laminar flow hoods shield the working environment from airborne contaminants such as dust by maintaining a constant, unidirectional flow of HEPA-filtered air over the workspace. Depending on the requirement- the flow can be horizontal, blowing parallel to the work surface, or vertical, blowing from top down onto the work surface. There are three kinds of laminar flow hoods, designated as Class I, II and III, each have been established to meet various research and clinical requirements.

What are the classes of laminar flow hoods?

Class I- offer significant levels of protection to laboratory personnel and to the environment when used with correct microbiological techniques. However, they do not provide cultures protection from contamination.

Class II- are designed for work involving BSL-1, 2, and 3 materials, and they also provide an aseptic environment required for cell culture experiments. Class II laminar flow cabinets are used for handling potentially hazardous materials such as primate-derived cultures, virally infected cultures, carcinogenic etc.

Class III- laminar flow cabinets are gas-tight, they deliver the highest level of protection achievable to personnel and the external environment. Class III laminar flow cabinets are required for work involving known human pathogens and other BSL-4 materials.

SterilSafe Laminar Flow Hood

Class II in that they are equipped with a partial front working opening designed to allow the intake of 30% of the total air in play at a minimum speed of 0.4 m / s and a recirculation system of the remaining 70% which is sent on the laminar flow work area at an average speed of 0.4 m / s (as defined by the EN 12469 standards).

Type A1, according to NSF 49 (U.S.A.) regulations, as they can be used in safety conditions even by returning the portion of expelled air from the front barrier to the environment.

Type A2 as, according to NSF 49 (U.S.A.) regulations, the expelled air quota can be channelled towards the outside of the room (for more technical details see the dedicated paragraph) .

Certification The BSC of the STERILSAFE series, model 48 (120cm) and 72 (180cm) are certified by TUV according to EN 12469:2000 The model 36 (90cm) and 60 (150cm) are designed and manufactured according to the same EN 12469:2000 but they’re not certified.

  • Re-circulating and extractor fans: the ‘S’-Series are supplied with single centrifugal fan, whilst models of the ‘D’ Series with double centrifugal fan (main and exhaust) to provide complete operator, product and environmental protection. Moreover the ‘D’ models fitted with double motor-fan are designed and are also suitable to discharge the filtered air outside the laboratory through a ducting system if required.
  • Filtration: H14 HEPA/ULPA filters with an efficiency better than 99,995 % MPPS (EN-1822).
  • Operation Condition: Air cleanliness in Class ISO 3 as per ISO EN 14644-1.

Gemini Vertical Laminar Airflow Cabinets

  • External structure in epoxy powder coated cold-rolled steel for excellent corrosion resistance to the attack by aggressive common chemicals

  • Work surface in stainless steel AISI 304L fixed in one piece perforated
  • Front window: Stratified hinged safety glass to give easy access to large items. It is provided with gas springs to keep it open during maintenance or sanitization operations
  • Filtration: H14 HEPA/ULPA filter with an efficiency better than 99,995 % MPPS (EN-1822)
  • Operation Condition: Air cleanliness in Class ISO 3 as per ISO EN 14644-1
  • Motor blower: direct coupled motor, electronic speed controlled to maintain a constant laminar air flow of 0.45m/sec, and compensate for a partially clogged filter up to a maximum plenum pressure of 40 mm of water
  • Servicing side glass with ports for service taps installation
  • Lighting: fluorescent tubes in built-in housing, placed outside the sterile area. D.O.P.-DEHS inlet port for testing the HEPA/ULPA filters. UV sterilizing lamp (optional) installed on the aluminium front closure panel complete two switch-off countdown timers, one variable on a 0-3 hours scale (1 minute steps), the other set to 3 fixed hours.

VBH Laminar Flow Hood

  • BIOHAZARD as they manage to satisfy the performances described in the following paragraphs.
  • Class IIin that they are equipped with a partial front working opening designed to allow the intake of 30% of the total air in play at a minimum speed of 0.4 m / s and a recirculation system of the remaining 70% which is sent on the laminar flow work area at an average speed of 0.4 m / s (as defined by the EN 12469 standards).

Helios Horizontal laminar flow cabinets

The Helios series cabins are of the horizontal laminar flow type. They are used in all those situations in which it is necessary to protect the product from harmful effects deriving from the uncontrolled diffusion of airport contaminants during its handling.

They are normally used in Microbiology laboratories. However, find an ever-increasing use in different research fields and in particular for the handling in sterility of:

  • Quality control in the food industry
  • Micromechanical assemblies
  • Preparation of parenteral nutritional therapies
  • In vitro fertilization

Product protection: sterility of the work area above ISO 4 EN 14644-1

As they are not biological safety cabins, they CANNOT be used for handling pathogens.

Bioban Series Biohazard Safety Cabinets (BSC)

Biohazard Safety Cabinets (BSC) are used in all those situations where it is necessary to protect the operator and the environment from harmful effects deriving from the uncontrolled spread of airport contaminants and, in equal measure, until no environmental interference of a microbiological nature involves and compromises the product during its manipulation. They are normally used in the laboratories of Microbiology, Virology, Haematology, Cell cultures. They find an ever-increasing use in innovative research fields and in particular for the manipulation of:

  • Oncogenic viruses
  • Recombinant DNA
  • Pathogens
  • BIOHAZARD as they manage to satisfy the performances described in the following paragraphs.
  • Class II in that they are equipped with a partial front working opening designed to allow the intake of 30% of the total air in play at a minimum speed of 0.4 m / s and a recirculation system of the remaining 70% which is sent on the laminar flow work area at an average speed of 0.4 m / s (as defined by the EN 12469 standards).

  • Polaris Vertical Laminar Flow Hoods

    Polaris series vertical laminar flow cabinets are used in situations in which it is necessary to protect the product from harmful effects deriving from the uncontrolled diffusion of airport contaminants during its handling.

    Since these are not biological safety cabins, they CANNOT be used for handling pathogens.

    Polaris series vertical laminar flow cabinets are used in situations in which it is necessary to protect the product from harmful effects deriving from the uncontrolled diffusion of airborn contaminants during its handling.

    Since these are not biological safety cabins, they CANNOT be used for handling pathogens.

    The primary use of the Polaris series vertical laminar flow hoods is for laboratories of Microbiology, Virology, Haematology, Cell cultures; and is increasingly used in innovative research fields and in particular, for the handling in sterility of:

    • Non-pathogenic cell cultures
    • Quality control in the pharmaceutical and food industry
    • Micromechanical assemblies

    The POLARIS model cabins produced by ALS are defined as: Vertical Laminar Flow as they are able to satisfy the performances described in the previous paragraph. Product protection: sterility of the working area above ISO class 3 according to EN 14644.

    MVF Series Vertical Laminar Flow Units

    Sterile MVF modules are Vertical Laminar Flow units providing Class ISO 3 according to ISO 14644-1 – which can be joined together to build up small to room size clean room environments. These LAF modules can be supported by stainless steel legs or suspended from the ceiling by means of eyebolts positioned on top of each module.

    Polycarbonate or PVC strip curtains with quick release system on the surrounding edges of the modules, contain and separate the clean area from the external environment. Tailor-cut size modular units can be assembled and suspended on top of the restricted area barrier (RABS) over drug-making pharmaceutical machines to protect the sterility of the products during filling operations.

    STERIL LAF modules can be used in several ways in the food and beverage industries to create a strong overpressure inside the food filling machine to prevent external contaminants to reach the filling process.

    • Body structure fully made in stainless steel AISI 304L and press-bent metal sheets with a radius of 3 mm for easy cleaning and roughness lower than 0,8Ra.
    • Anodized aluminium filter protective grid.
    • Prefiltration stage consisting of G3 filtration cells made in AISI 304L stainless steel with typical filtering of 80 ≤ Am > 90 according to EN 779
    • Filtration stage consisting of main H14 HEPA/ULPA filters certified low pressure drop with typical efficiency of 99.995% MPPS according to CEN EN 1822. Filters replacement from the bottom (BR series) or from the side of the module (SR series).
    • Improved bag plenum design for better air flow diffusion and lower noise level. Negative pressure pattern conforming to GMP requirements to prevent risks of escape of contaminated external air – or by-passing filter - and to reduce pressure transition losses.
    • Outlet for DEHS filter integrity test.

    Cytobox Negative Pressure Isolator

    The Cytobox series are designed for processes / applications where operator, product and environmental protection is required, from the effects caused by an uncontrolled spread of airborne contaminants. As well as, at the same time, to avoid any biological contamination between the environment and the product during processing. Normally used in the pharmacies of hospitals, oncology departments, day-hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. For correct use and application of the booth described here, it is necessary to refer to the appropriate regulations and rules in force in the country in which the booth is used.

    Cytobox is a Class 3 negative pressure isolator according to ISO / FDIS 14644-7 with a seal level measured in 16 Pa / minute, with a unidirectional flow in Class 3 according to ISO 14644-1 or EC GMP Grade A, isolating operator and environment from the process and its constituent parts.

    A HEPA filter is inserted under the work surface, which is passed through by all the passage air, in order to keep the work area clean and free of contaminants.

    External air is sucked in from the top of the pass-boxes through a HEPA / ULPA H14 filter and pushed into the work area of ??the pass-boxes themselves. Then the air passing through a second HEPA / ULPA H14 filter is sucked in by the main fan.

    The pressurised air pushed into the plenum passes through the HEPA / ULPA LAF H14 filter and then downwards, in a laminar flow, into the working chamber to protect the products handled. From here, through the work surface, it is sucked into the main HEPA / ULPA filter H14 under the work surface; then the air passes through the channel located in the back of the working chamber.

    Part of the air is expelled through the exhaust HEPA H14 filter; this process creates the negative pressure condition in the work area to protect the operator and the environment.

    Operation Condition: Air cleanliness in Class ISO 3 as per ISO:EN 14644-1 and Grade A EU-cGMP.

    CTH Biohazard Safety Cabinets (BSC)

    • Work chamber in single piece AISI 304 stainless steel for the best cleanability.
    • Front window: Stratified hinged safety glass to give easy access to large items. It is provided with gas springs to keep it open during maintenance or sanitization operations.

    • Re-circulating and extractor fans: two centrifugal fans direct driven motor (main and exhaust), with protection factor IP-55, controlled by two automatic independent speed-flow rate regulators and microprocessor system to keep constant airflow, showing laminar flow and protection barrier work conditions.

    • Filtration: H14 HEPA/ULPA filters with an efficiency better than 99,995 % MPPS (EN-1822).

      Third bank of class H14 HEPA/ULPA filters with easy replace system is positioned beneath work surface built for handling cytotoxic drugs

    CTH C2 is a triple absolute filter cabinet and it is defined as:

    Class II as designed with a frontal working opening for the aspiration of 30% of the total air involved, at a minimum velocity of 0,40 m/sec., and the remaining 70% is recirculated through a HEPA filter in the working chamber with a laminar flow velocity between of 0,25 and 0,5 m/sec (as defined by DIN 12980 and by EN 12469).

    Sterlisafe Evo Biohazard Safety Cabinets
